Halvergate is a relatively small village in the county of Norfolk, situated approximately 4 miles from Acle and 6 miles from Great Yarmouth and sits between the rivers Bure and Yare.  It comes under the jurisdiction of Norfolk County Council and Broadland District Council.  In the 2001 census, it had a population of 607 in 243 households.  To the East of the village are the Halvergate Marshes, covering an area of approximatley 2,642 hectares (10.20 square miles) of which 1,432.7 hectares (3,540 acres) are a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest.  Originally an estuary, the area was drained in the 1600’s and converted to grazing marsh with the help of windpumps/windmills and drainage ditches to graze sheep and cattle.  Halvergate Marshes is the largest area of traditionally managed grazing marsh in the Broadland area.

The Parish of Halvergate also encompasses the village of Tunstall.  Both Halvergate and Tunstall have churches dedicated to St Peter and St Paul.  Halvergate church was built in the 13th century with a tower of 84 feet, which houses 6 bells.  It is part of a Benefice and services are on a rotational basis between the churches in the Benefice.   Tunstall Church was formally declared redundant in 1980 but still conducts a very limited number of services each year, including the occasional wedding.  The church itself was built in the 14th century but has since fallen into disrepair/ruination, with only the Chancel and Vestry being roofed.

Halvergate has a Village Hall, owned by the Parish Council but run by the Village Hall Committee and which has various functions and activities throughout the year.  There is also a very active Playing Field Assocation (Halvergate Playing Field Association) which holds many events in its Pavilion and also manages to an extremely high standard the playing field itself, which is also the cricket pitch.

As well as the Village Hall and Playing Field &  Pavilion, there is also a pub, The Red Lion, which also hosts various events and serves food.

The Parish Council is made up of 7 councillors (details of which can be found on this site) and must hold a minimum of 3 Ordinary meetings per year plus one Annual General Meeting.  In addition to these, the Parish Council also holds an Open Village Meeting which takes place on the same date as the Annual General Meeting.  Although legally only bound to hold 3 meetings a year, the Parish Council aims to hold 8 meetings per year.  It is not possible to publish dates of future meetings in advance, as each meeting date is arranged at the end of a meeting due to the nature of some councillors’ jobs, which makes it unrealistic to plan too far ahead but, generally, it aims to hold a meeting once every 6 weeks.
